Hopkins County School officials revealed that 3rd graders at Hanson Elementary School, after creating 3-D bedroom models, were visited by a special guest who demonstrated real-life applications of their skills.
Officials reported that Brooke Dunbar Gilliam, who is featured on the TV show “Making Modern with Brooke and Brice,” visited the school on Monday to talk to students about being a builder. They noted that Gilliam’s niece, Aubrey Dunbar, is a 3rd grader at Hanson, and her mother, Jill Dunbar, is a teacher at Madisonville North Hopkins.
Gilliam remarked that she had observed a lot of innovation in the students’ room designs and inquired about the challenges they faced, with several students agreeing that fitting everything into the room was difficult. Officials noted that Gilliam’s presentation included clips from her TV show and examples of innovative solutions, like using loft beds or Murphy beds to save space.
Gilliam expressed her hope that the presentation inspired students to feel excited about building and creating new things in their world. School officials pointed out that her renovation series “Making Modern with Brooke and Brice” can be streamed on Magnolia Network, Max, and Discovery+.
School officials stated that the “Designing Your Own Bedroom” project aligns perfectly with Hopkins County Schools’ Deeper Learning initiative. They noted that students utilized a range of skills, including math, art, and problem-solving, to create their designs. This month, the schools are emphasizing the characteristic of being an Innovator. Officials also mentioned that the students were eager to showcase their designs, making it a great project.
