McLean County Faces Daunting Cleanup from Historic Flooding

As floodwaters begin to slowly recede in McLean County, the community faces the daunting task of recovery, with numerous roads still impassable and the local school district shut down indefinitely due to one of the most significant flood disasters in the county’s history.

WFMW’s News Edge spoke with McLean County High School Agriculture Teacher Benji Kilgore who mentioned that, according to what he’s read, over 60% of the county is currently underwater.

click to download audioKilgore, who lives in Island, added even if people aren’t directly impacted by floodwaters at their home, they are impacted in their daily routine.

click to download audioKilgore noted that he believes the river reached its peak on Monday, but it is unlikely to recede significantly anytime soon.

click to download audioHe stated that the flooding has impacted everyone in the county, including the school system.

click to download audioIt has also impacted the baseball and softball teams and band students, as their fields are under water. He also noted that the flooding prevented the baseball team from participating in the All A tournament, but stressed that school administrators are prioritizing everyone’s safety given the flooded roads and the uncertainty about the integrity of the roads beneath the water.

With the school district closed until further notice, he, as a teacher, is uncertain about what the summer will hold.

click to download audioKilgore stated that those wishing to help can donate cleaning supplies and essential items such as shoes, clothes, household supplies, and furniture. He mentioned that the McLean County Chamber of Commerce’s social media page lists several locations for dropping off donations. He said donations can also be made to the American Red Cross.
