A traffic stop in Madisonville Sunday evening led to the arrest of an Alabama man on firearm charges.
According to Madisonville Police, 44-year-old Jeremy Merchant from Elberta was pulled over after running a red light on Main Street. During the stop, the officer reportedly noticed a firearm in the passenger seat, and Merchant disclosed that a second firearm was in the back seat of the vehicle. Police said that Merchant admitted he was a convicted felon and that he should not possess the firearms.
Merchange was taken into custody and charged with a license to be in possession and possession of a firearm by a convicted felony, along with a traffic violation for disregarding a traffic control device. He was booked into the Hopkins County Jail.
